Canada's Dancevic through to final; Wozniak ousted in Eastbourne semi

Friday, June 19, 2009

Frank Dancevic of Canada celebrates his win over Fabrice Santoro of France during their Eastbourne grass court tournament semifinal tennis match on June 19.
Canada's Frank Dancevic played his way to the second final of his career on Friday at the Eastbourne Championships, overpowering fourth seed Frenchman Fabrice Santoro 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinal of the grass court tournament.
The Niagara Falls, Ont., native lost his only other chance at a title in Indianapolis in 2007 to Dmitry Tursunov, and he could have a shot at revenge at Eastbourne.
Tursunov, who's seeded No. 2, plays Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain in the other semi on Friday at Eastbourne.
On the women's side in the semi earlier on Friday, fellow Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak opened with a strong first set but wasn't able to hold on for the win.
The Blainville, Que., native lost 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 to sixth seed Caroline Wozniacki. It marks the third time Wozniak, 21, has lost to the Danish teen.
Wozniak opened the grass court tournament with one of the biggest wins of her career, a 6-0, 6-3 victory over French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Canadians score big upsets
Dancevic, 24, also opened the tournament with an upset, taking down top seed Igor Andreev.
In the semifinal, the No. 126 seeded Canadian produced seven aces and broke Santoro's serve once in each set to take the match in 1 hour, 23 minutes.
The first set took almost an hour before Dancevic broke it open in the second with a break to make it 5-4 en route to his sixth win of the season.
He's now 6-5 heading into Wimbledon, which begins Monday. Dancevic is the only Canadian playing in Wimbledon on the men's side and will make his fourth appearance in the tournament, looking to improve on a career-best second round exit in each of the last two years.
Dancevic will face No. 72-ranked Steve Darcis of Belgium in the first round.
Wozniak's 3rd Wimbledon
Wozniak will open the tournament on Monday against Italy's Francesca Schiavone, the 50th seed and a veteran of eight Wimbledons.
Wozniak is appearing in her third Wimbledon and aiming to improve on a career-best second-round exit from the tournament in 2008 — at the hands of Wozniacki.
On Thursday at Eastbourne, Wozniak took control in the first set to take it in 30 minutes. But Wozniack got back on track in the second set and took the match with two straight 6-4 set victories.
Wozniacki also defeated the Canadian in the final of the MPS Group Championships in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., in April.
She'll play Virginie Razzano in the final at Eastbourne on Saturday.
