LONDON - South Africa bowler Johan Botha has been warned by cricket's ruling body that his 'doosra' delivery is illegal and that he must not use it while playing international cricket.
The International Cricket Council announced today that independent tests and analysis showed that Botha's elbow extension for the doosra exceeded the 15-degree level of tolerance permitted under the regulations. The rule is designed to prevent bowlers from throwing rather than bowling the ball.
"The analysis showed that the amount of elbow extension in Botha's 'doosra' delivery was 26.7 degrees with no single delivery proving to be legal," the ICC said in a statement.
The doosra is held by the bowler in the same way as for an offspinner, but the bowler's wrist action spins the ball in the opposite direction to what a batsman would expect.
The ICC said that Botha's off-break and arm-ball deliveries were within the permitted limits and that the 27-year-old could continue to bowl those types of deliveries.
Botha's action was reported by the umpires following the completion of the fourth one-day international between Australia and South Africa in Port Elizabeth on April 13. The report was made by the two on-field umpires, Brian Jerling and Asoka de Silva, along with third umpire Rudi Koertzen.
Botha may apply to have his doosra reassessed after he has modified his action to comply with the rules, the ICC said.
