Yemen tries Somalis over piracy

The suspects were detained by Indian and Russian forces

More than 20 suspected Somali pirates have appeared in court in Yemen after being detained in the Gulf of Aden by international naval forces.

Indian forces detained 12 of them in December after they allegedly hijacked a Yemeni fishing boat.

Ten others, detained in February and transferred to Yemen by Russian forces, face charges of attempting to hijack an unidentified foreign vessel.

All pleaded not guilty and the trials have been adjourned until October.

International naval forces stepped up patrols in the Gulf of Aden this year in an attempt to curb Somali piracy, but relatively few of the pirates detained have faced trial because of the legal complexities involved.
