Harry Potter Movie Poised to Set International Record

Monday, July 20, 2009

No grey skies for "Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince" at the box office.

"Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" posted a record 5-day opening, according to studio estimates, showing fans of the blockbuster J.K. Rowling novel series haven't yet tired of the teenage magician.

The movie sold an estimated $396.7 million since debuting around the world on Wednesday, according to estimates from Warner Bros. If the figure holds, that would eclipse the $381.7 million generated in the first five days by "Spider-Man 3" in 2007. Final U.S. figures will be out Monday, while some international results may not be for several more days.

The sixth Harry Potter film saw the highest international gross for a the first five days of release at an estimated $237 million. "Spider-Man 3" holds the current standard at $230.5 million.

"Half-Blood Prince" opened on Wednesday to the biggest results of the series, taking in $58.2 million domestically to make it the second-biggest opening effort on a Wednesday. But its estimated $159.7 million 5-day take in the U.S. pales in comparison to the $200 million taken in by "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" in its five days last month. Still, the movie's opening U.S. haul for the period is sixth-best all time.

Warner Bros. is a unit of Time Warner Inc.
